Alexandra Podkopay and Yael Knafo winners!

18.4.12

The project of the Interior Design students Alexandra Podkopay and Yael Knafo has won second prize of “Un Giardino in Città – Collezione Europa” contest organized by the firm Unopiù.

Umbra is the result of a need of plants and shades in Barcelona and semiprivate outdoor areas. After an observation and research period, students in Interior Design Alexandra Podkopay and Yael Knafo developed this project of urban or private furniture with the intention of creating an organic space, initially as a structure decorated with plants and subsequently as a structure made of plants itself.

The design is a geometrical mesh in aluminium in which ropes are coiled up randomly to simulate the different densities of cellulose. The organic ropes are covered with plastic based on corn starch, which provides them with rigidity. On the same structure there are flowerpots to plant the climbing plants that over time will end up embracing the whole structure from which they will feed themselves on ropes and organic plastic.
