The project of the Interior Design student Charmelle Taute wins a mention in the International Design Contest JTI Clean City Lab organized by the institution Future Concept Lab in cooperation with JTI. The contest promotes research on responsible design at the service of a cleaner urban environment through the development of an outdoor ashtray.
Benching is based on the knowledge that in our urban society, smokers separate themselves from non-smokers on a bench, by smoking over the backrest, enabling everyone, to utilize the same space harmoniously. The project focuses on the communication of this smoking area on the bench, creating awareness of the ashtray and the convenience of it.
The ashtray will be hung from the back of the bench in accordance with the natural motion of smokers to lean over the back so as not to disturb or inconvenience others. It will be made out of recycled cigarette butts that have been made into a semi-liquid and poured into a mould. This will allow smokers to feel like they are contributing to a cleaner city by not only using it, but also by providing the material for more ashtrays to be built.
