The Vallcarca neighbourhood (Barcelona) will have a new appearance  soon. And this will be possible partly thanks to the IED Barcelona students from the Undergraduate Degrees in Interior Design and Graphic Design, whose thesis project has now become a reality.

Parc de les Cases is a proposal to gain a new space delimited by coloured modular fences, so that residents can use it to perform and develop activities.

0Our students have been working for weeks now, fencing the space. Even so, it hasn’t been an easy process, given that many of the students from IED are foreigners and they had to do an initial research interviewing the neighbours to get the idea of the history, the reality and the needs the neighbourhood has.

However, this is not the first time that our students collaborate with the catalan organizations. Last year, the Visual Communication students presented the new graphic design of La Violeta, a Catalan cultural center.

The research and innovation department of IED Barcelona, I+ED Lab, has participated in the edition of the JTI Clean City Lab 2013 competition. An international design event organized by the Japanese company JTI (Japan Tobacco International) in collaboration with Future Concept Lab (Institute of strategic research and consulting).

Horge Pérez, director of I+ED Lab Barcelona, and the teacher and architect Alberto Marcos coordinated some student projects of IED Madrid that were awarded during the Milano Design Week for its originality, innovation and responsability towards urban environment.

Once again I+ED Lab Barcelona is involved in initiatives that promote students to research and develop products and services for businesses whose purpose is to use the concept design as a key factor for market positioning. Some of the projects developed that are currently on the market are: the Coanda extractor hood made for Frecan company and the first Solar Bus Stop without wiring in Spain of Capmar.

The IED DIPLOMAS are programs of excellence in undergraduate education for the creative industries, recognized by the long history that IED has, and a response conceived to face to the challenges of a global market where companies and agencies need vanguard creative professionals with new skills and competencies to differentiate and position their brands, products and services.

The methodology of IED Diplomas is based on a team of professionals, the school itself and their “know how”, in combination with the “learning by doing” approach from students to enhance interdisciplinarity. Accordingly, syllabuses are conceived specifically to offer, during three years, evolutionary didactic objectives that conclude with the final project:

1st CREATIVE CULTURE
The first year focuses on providing a basis for creative cultural sector.

2nd STRATEGIC MANAGEMENT
The second year is centred on the tools needed to develop strategies in this ever-changing world.

3rd DECISION-MAKING AND IMPLEMENTATION OF THE PERSONAL PROJECT

Natalia Londoño, alumni of IED Barcelona Fashion Design Master, will participate as a special guest in the 12th edition of Círculo de la Moda de Bogotá “Evolution” Autumn Winter 2013-2014. This opportunity has been born through a new agreement established between Círculo de la Moda and the Catalan platform Modafad with the aim of internationalisation the emerging young fashion.

The designer, chosen to represent Modafad, will present next May 8th the Autumn-Winter 2013’14, inspired by natural fractals vegetables and winter landscapes to generate volumes and textures, mainly in upper garments and accessories. The meaning of her brand, natalia.londoño, starts from the femininity and the comfort of natural to the sophistication.

IED Barcelona will host on Saturday 8th June at six pm the Combo Jazz Amadeus concert of the third edition of SIMFONIC Festival. This project was born from the desire to show the work that musical schools develope and proposes a marriage between music and architecture. It invites you to enjoy in a different way emblematic spaces such as the new building of IED Barcelona, result of a reform and rehabilitation of an old textile factory of Barcelona.

The classical music concert will take place at the yard of IED and will be carried out by students of the Amadeus Academy, a music school of Sant Gervasi.

Second year students of Undergraduate Degree in Graphic Design have done as a final project for the subject of Photography_1, a photographic report with Pentax equipments with pentax and sigma lenses for the initiative called “Enfilant l'Agulla”, carried out by the NGO “El lloc de la dona”. The initiative is to provide information in the area of sewing and pattern making to women that have been or are currently involved in prostitution to provide a means of social integration.

The purpose of the report is to make a presentation on the IED and generate useful content for the visibility of the NGO.

A few days ago IED Barcelona organized the first “Auction of ideas that couldn’t wait for the brief”. An event organised by the agency DRAFTFCB, the prestigious auction house Sotheby’s and the award-winner chef Paco Roncero.

The event was focused on leading  Spanish  brands, which have the opportunity to bid on unique, different and innovative ideas. The main feature of this auction was that in order to get a creative idea, companies didn’t have  to bid money, but time they wanted to spend hearing the proposal out exclusively and for the first time ever. All ideas were sold, most of them by their maximum value, and they were bought by brands such as Grupo Tragaluz, Perfetti Van Melle, NH Hoteles, El País and Illy, among others.

In this case, IED Barcelona is doubly pleased, because the event was a success and because of our students of Transportation Design, Product Design and Graphic Design who presented and sold three proposals.

To take an Official Undergraduate Degree in Fashion, Interior, Product or Graphic Design at IED Barcelona it is not necessary to do the Spanish university entrance examination: you’ll just have to pass our Admission Test.

For this reason, IED Barcelona is offering a preparatory course on Thursday,  April  25th, that will last 4h. Its aim is to prepare you for the Official Admission Test to Undergraduate Degrees of IED Barcelona.

During the first hour we will recommend you some interesting readings and teach you how to analyze a text. The last three hours will introduce you to some of the most important sketching and drawing freehand tools and techniques. The course is voluntary, and free of charge to all those who already booked for one of our Undergraduate Degrees (starting on September 2013).

Our Intensive Masters in Digital Creative Business and in Innovation Strategy Entrepreneurship combines classes with content developed remotely using on-line monitoring. This allows participants to take the course from a period of 3 months in Barcelona, and develop the rest of training from their country.

The masters are structured in three different modules:

1st ONLINE - From March 4 to April 5, 2013 
2nd ON-SITE - From April 8 to June 28, 2013
3rd ONLINE - From July 8 to November 8, 2013
4th THESIS - From 18 to 22 November 2013

For the first time the designs for "The Wearable Means of Transport" will be exhibited at the BMW stand at the Biennale Internationale Design Saint-Étienne 2013. Svala, Flymag, B-Motion and City Skiing, projects done by students of Fashion Design and Transportation Design of the 2011 academic year, will be on exhibition in the French city from the 14th to 31st of March.

As you know, a few weeks ago the workshops week was held at the school. During five days, students from all areas of the school came together in interdisciplinary groups to work with professionals on several topics.

We interviewed Iván Córdoba, Media Design alumni who teaches the workshop on "Video-Test, do you like movies? Reappropriation and Assembly", to tell us how the experience went.

Which was the main objective of the workshop? What was the most important to you?

The objective was to build a video piece made of fragments of movies by re-appropriation and film editing. The most important thing was to make students understand that editing is a way to write a story, in this case writing with images. And reflect on the power of film editing to construct meaning.

What have you seen in the students and the evolution of the projects?

What I have observed in students is a great interest of making a poetic video essay to tell very profound and original stories, but also in some cases they have shown interest in making a tribute to a director and also a film genre from a very particular perspective. Many of them had very clear from the beginning what they wanted to tell and learned quickly to use the tools to capture the footage they needed and edit it putting the images in the service of the story they wanted to explain.

Which are the results?

The results in many cases are superb; in a very short period of time (only 4 days) the vast majority of students were able to understand the concept and nature of the workshop, capturing lots of footage and editing it with Final Cut, (with which many had never worked before), always attending to the script that had previously designed to build the story. In general I think the students have far exceeded the expectations of the workshop, because at first my concern was that they did not understand the whole concept behind it. Edit is not simply to put one scene after another, it is write with images, to build a story with meaning. That may be more conventional in some cases and more abstract or poetic in other, but it must always be with an intention, with a narrative. And I see that in many cases this has been achieved, even by students who came from other disciplines that have nothing to do with the visual arts.

What is the best of the workshops week?

The best is to see the atmosphere created in the school, where students of different branches of design come together and forget for a few days their usual discipline and get to try other languages​​, with different tools to create, and that's when creativity emerges in its purest form. And above all, the most spectacular is the day of the final presentation, when they expose in the "Open space" the results of all the workshops, and then you wonder how it is possible to get such good results in such a short time.

In a week IED Barcelona will be at the Saló de l'Ensenyament Barcelona 2013. During five days we will move the labs and classrooms in a creative manner to show the everyday life of the school. We will also offer some workshops to teach the technique of moulage in fashion design or sketching in transportation design.

IED Barcelona has created two new courses as educational response to the challenges of a global market where companies and agencies need vanguard creative professionals with new skills and competencies to differentiate and position their brands, products and services.

These are three-year courses (180 credits) taught in English.

- IED Diploma in Creative Advertising and Branding is about bridging the gap between creativity, communication, advertising and branding to educate and form future creative professionals, able to develop, coordinate and implement innovative and highly effective strategies that guarantee unique experiences at all costumer touch points, critical for the success of any brand, product or service.

- IED Diploma in Interactive Media Design. This program aims to educate and form future creative media professionals who are able to develop, coordinate and implement innovative and highly effective interactive and digital communications like promotional videos, visual and interactive installations, apps, along with interactive online and offline interfaces for smart brands, products or services in an international market.

Open from December 4th, Film a l'Agulla at La Filmoteca de Catalunya: an exhibition about the relation between fashion and cinema, from designs by students of IED Barcelona. The exhibition is presented in conjunction with a film season about the same topic which will be shown until late March.

Film a l'Agulla presents how cinema has influenced the fashion world creating styles and trends, and how image, costumes, aesthetics, clothing ... - can have a main role in filmic representations. All this is reflected in the projects of the students differentiated in three parts:

The IED Fashion Design final thesis of two students who were inspired by the cinema. Seven looks from the collections The Elephant Man, of Carmen Triñanes, and Atra, of Halldorsdottir Hrajnhildur.

A collection of accessories like headbands, necklaces and bags, made by students of the second course in Fashion Design, with materials related to the world of cinema or from La Filmoteca like celluloid film, paper tickets and programs and tin boxes. The project was developed in the Complementos y Accesorios subject teached by the IED Barcelona fashion scientific director Pilar Pasamontes, and also in the Accessories in Fashion Design subject teached by Katia Jessek.

The exhibition also includes nine thesis of the Master in Costume Design for theater, cinema and opera coordinated by Isidre Prunés.

We also note the collaboration of the students of the Continuing Study Program in Editorial Graphic Design , who designed the Fanzine Film a l'Agulla and the exhibition poster.

Do you know Fucking Young!? Eduardo Garcia and Adriano Batista’s blog dedicated to menswear. They pay special attention to young values ​​and people with skills around them, mixed with large firms, renowned photographers and international publications. In addition, they have an incredible print magazine since last September.

We also want to recommend Interiores Minimalistas, a blog about architecture and contemporary interior design, focusing particularly on the minimalist trend.

OPEN ENROLMENT - STARTING DATE: MARCH 2013

The IED Barcelona offers Intensive Courses in an innovative methodology that combines classes with content developed remotely using on-line monitoring.
This allows participants to take the course from a period of 3 months in Barcelona, and develop the rest of training from their country.

The masters are structured in three different modules:

Introductory Module: The first stage of training will be carried out remotely via online platform. Each participant will study the issues raised by the teachers, and may consult with them. Drills to be delivered also via digital platform, and evaluate teachers to discuss and analyze the student upon arrival in Barcelona.



Face Module: During the 3 months of their stay in Barcelona, students will perform 400 hours in the IED.
This period will be visits to companies, studios and places of interest, for teaching purposes and accompanied by teachers. Some of these will be in Barcelona and will be scheduled every training course as required.


Thesis Module: As consolidation of the new knowledge acquired during the course, students must complete a research project that includes a stage of analysis, implementation plan, and is based on a royal commission in collaboration with a company.

Final Presentation: Students must return to Barcelona for a week to present his thesis. In those days there will be an intensive work in collaboration with teachers, which will adjust the final details for the final presentation of the thesis jury.
